AI Is Steering Gen Z to the Trades. Is CTE Ready?
Young people are betting that a welding torch is safer than a keyboard. That instinct is reshaping demand for career and technical education faster than most programs can respond.

LaDonna Glass was, by her own account, the brainy kid. When she left Mississippi State University after a year to sign up for a four-year electrician apprenticeship, she carried a familiar fear with her. "I felt like if I did not go to college, I would have been a failure," she told The New York Times. Today she earns $21 an hour as an apprentice with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, takes free classes toward her license, and is on track for a field where the average pay approaches $90,000. Her verdict on the old script: "The cost of living is making people realize we don't have four years to sit around and just go to school."
Glass is part of a shift that the numbers now confirm. More than 60 percent of American high school graduates still head straight to college. But enrollment at public two-year schools focused on vocational and trade programs grew by nearly 20 percent between 2020 and 2025, according to National Student Clearinghouse data, with apprenticeships and private trade schools climbing too. The reason is not nostalgia for blue-collar work. It is a cold read of the early-career job market and the arrival of artificial intelligence.
The Math and the Machine
Two forces are pushing in the same direction. The first is cost. The list price of a four-year education now approaches $200,000, roughly double what it was three decades ago, while many private trade programs finish for less than $25,000. Logan Bangert, 18, was accepted to play football at Penn State, then balked at more than $50,000 a year for out-of-state tuition. He completed a seven-month wind-turbine program for around $21,000, helped by a state grant, and now repairs turbine blades in Houston for $80,000 to $90,000 a year.
The second force is AI. Students describe watching automation seep into their classrooms while older siblings with degrees struggle to find work in their fields. Ryan Shikhman, a 21-year-old HVAC technician who runs an account called Trades Over College, captured the mood in a single caption over a video of himself welding a copper pipe: "POV: AI can't replace HVAC." He now makes over $100,000 running his own business. You cannot solder a ball valve from the cloud.
The story is no longer whether students should consider the trades. A growing number already decided. The open question is whether the education system can move them from interest to a recognized credential fast enough to meet a shortage measured in the millions.
Stigma Is Still the Tax
Every young worker in the Times piece described the same headwind: the well-meaning aunt, the guidance counselor, the parent who wanted something "better." A 2024 report from the software company Jobber found that 71 percent of Gen Z respondents believed vocational school carried more stigma than college, and only 7 percent of parents said they would prefer their child pursue a trade. One student asked her boyfriend's family not to be told she was in trade school. Another was told welding was "a man's job."
That stigma is expensive. The nonprofit Bring Back the Trades projects 1.4 million trade jobs will go unfilled by 2030 as skilled workers retire and infrastructure demand rises. Closing that gap means treating CTE as rigorous, not remedial, and giving students pathways that lead to credentials employers respect.

The Irony Worth Naming
There is a genuine irony in students fleeing AI by running toward the trades, because AI is one of the best tools we have for getting them credentialed faster. The threat and the remedy are the same technology, used differently.

The goal, he added, is to get parents "proud to say 'My kid's a welder' at a cocktail party." This is not college versus trades. It is respecting both as serious paths to a career.
The Window Is Now
Grant is right that this is not a stampede away from the bachelor's degree, and it should not be. A degree still raises lifetime earnings; the median bachelor's holder out-earns a high-school graduate by roughly 1.8 to one. But for the large share of students who were never headed to a four-year campus, a fast, affordable, certification-bearing pathway is the difference between a career and a string of minimum-wage jobs. Cultural moments like this one do not stay open forever. Right now, a generation is treating certifications as the smart bet, employers are short more than a million workers, and Pell dollars are flowing into short-term programs for the first time. Translating that alignment into credentialed graduates is a solvable problem. It requires certification-aligned content that deploys quickly, learning that meets students at their reading level and in their language, and enough real-time insight for instructors to intervene early. None of that is magic. It is good pedagogy delivered at the scale the moment demands.
